Finally, the suspense over the prices of the mid-range phones that compete in the flagship space has ended. One Plus 8 will cost Rs 41,999 in India, while the OnePlus 8 will sell at Rs 54,999 in the US.

This is a big chunk off the US prices reported last week during the launch of the latest OnePlus phones. In the US, the OnePlus 8 will sell at USD 699, which works out to approximately Rs 53,000 and nearly the price of the OnePlus 8 Pro in India. At USD 899 or Rs 68,000, the OnePlus Pro in the US is Rs 13,000 more expensive than what is costs in India.

The US prices had prompted tech reviewers to say that the OnePlus which started off as a flagship is no more suited for the tag, as the phones are quite expensive themselves, narrowing the gap between the premium iPhone and Samsung and the mid-range OnePlus phones. But with this India-specific pricing, the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro remain competitive, especially when one does not want to spend a bomb to get top specs.

OnePlus 8 Pro – The proper flagship phone

The OnePlus 8 Pro is a proper flagship phone. Forget previous generations of handsets from the firm, and its ‘flagship killer’ underdog mantra. OnePlus is now officially mixing it with the biggest names in mobile.

Whereas handsets such as the OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro cut a few corners in order to hit a slightly lower price tag than the competition, the OnePlus 8 Pro isn’t pulling any punches – it’s now genuine competition for the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, iPhone 11 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro.

Unfortunately, the arrival of the OnePlus 8 Pro also means that the days of OnePlus offering an ‘affordable flagship’ option are over. But for that price tag, you’ll get top-tier specs and features – as well as 5G connectivity.

OnePlus has slapped the best display it’s ever made on the 8 Pro, and the Chinese company goes as far as to say it’s the best screen you’ll see on a phone all year.

It’s a bold claim, and one which may prove unfounded as the year goes on, but take nothing away from this handset: the 6.78-inch ‘Fluid Display’ with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support and QHD resolution is fantastic.

OnePlus 8 – The best phone for the price

The OnePlus 8 represents a culmination of trends. It brings the brand’s famously low-price, high-spec phones ever closer to, if not quite on par with, the polish of other flagship phones; and in several ways, it also sees OnePlus adopting some of its competitors’ design philosophies.

The OnePlus 8 doesn’t pack all of the Pro’s tricks – it misses out on a telephoto lens and wireless charging – but the essentials are all here: a Snapdragon 865 chipset, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, a 6.55-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, and a 4,300mAh battery that can be fully charged in an hour using the Warp Charge 30T charger included in the box.

Its specs are impressive enough, but with 5G connectivity, the OnePlus 8’s USD 699 approximately Rs 53,000 price tag makes it the most affordable 5G phone in many markets. It’s a svelte phone with few drawbacks, and hard not to recommend as the best affordable flagship of 2020 thus far.
